Here are two examples of helper orders from my files:
DENVER DEC 19 1961
TO C&E ENGS 488 AND 480
AT CHAMA
ENG 488 RUN EXTRA CHAMA TO DURANGO
ENG 480 HELP EXTRA 488 WEST CHAMA TO AZOTEA THEN RUN EXTRA AZOTEA TO GATO THEN HELP EXTRA 488 WEST GATO TO MP 443 THEN RUN EXTRA MP 443 TO DURANGO
HWE
Second example, different situation:
DENVER SEPT 8 1964
TO C&E ENGS 492 AND 484
ENGS 492 AND 484 RUN AS 1 EXTRA ALAMOSA TO CUMBRES AND AS 2 EXTRAS CUMBRES TO CHAMA
HWE
If I remember correctly the prohibition of running helpers coupled downhill between Chama and Durango was relatively recent. I think somebody like Earl Knoob knows the story about why the prohibition went into effect. So far as I can tell from the orders I have, in the the opposite direction (Durango to Chama) the helpers remained on the train in the downhill sections.
So at least in the later years when everything on the ng. "mainline" was extra, helpers and trains were all extras on the same order. Certainly might have been handled differently in earlier years.
