The flues, (or tubes I guess if we want to be technical), were also bored nightly in Leadville according to a hostler helper who worked there in the late '30's. I was surprised to hear this as well, since I thought that was quite a bit of work to do nightly and that they must have had a fairly annoying kind of coal. But he said that every night when the engines would come in they would "...coal up, knock the flues, wipe 'em down, and do whatever they needed to get 'em ready to head out the next morning."
