Two sand domes one for forward travel and one for reverse travel, that way the sand always falls in front of the driver. Switch engines and engines that run backwards alot often have two sand domes for this reason. Many Shays have a sand box behind the tank that serves the same purpose. No point putting sand down for the pilot truck alone.
