490 was retired in '62. It eventually was parted out. I know the smokebox went to the 492 due to a head on collision with a large (gigantic) rock that fell on the tracks near Juke's rock. The cab matriculated to the D&S and is presently in the Hermosa compound. Apparently the D&RGW was thinking about using the old cabs as some sort of shelter or something. 496 allegedly had a cracked boiler, but I have heard speculation of damage not so severe, but it was at a time when the Marshall pass ops were coming to an end and the 480's that were in Salida were coming to Alamosa, and there was way too much power to bother with repairing the 496. Same could be said for the 485 after its tumble into the pit in Salida. The 496 had pockets to couple directly to standard gauge. If you catch a picture of the 496, or if you check out 494's tender today you'll see the evidence (494 got 496's tender, it's a long story maybe someone else would like to share).
