In a video we have "Plow Extras" shot in Canada we got some earlier footage of a plow wrecking.
The branch line had not been plowed in a month or so and when they went to clear this huge cut, that was snowfilled, they had a lot of work. The wedge-plow with 3 GP9's on the Canadian National rammed the cut twice and came to a dead stop. The third time the went back a 1/2 mile or so for a run, and hit it again, only to encounter ice at the bottom. The plow went upwards like on a ski ramp, and when it got to the top the rear trucks came off, and tore the whole hood of the lead unit off, as the plow itself went over on its side. This was in 1971, and a lady in this town shot it on film. It aired on the London TV station(ontario apparently). I found out about it in 1988 when I was there doing my second plow tape, and coincidentally the guy who was in the plow(plow foreman), was the head maintainance guy at Stratford when I was there. So, I had him talk about it on video, to go with the footage. Rarest footage of trains I have ever seen. They were really lucky nobody was seriously hurt. He never was in a plow again. As the C&TS found out in 1999, ice can be a problem, and thats what happens over a long period of no snow removal!!
