Sorry, but I am not inclined to go strickly narrow gauge, nor would I make a trip to Europe to photograph railbuses or diesels. The only exceptions might be in superb scenery or with castles along the Rhine, something special like that.
I shot very few diesels in Europe in the 70's.
Film still cost a lot of money to me then, and I rationed it on things like simultaneous departures of 58 class engines on passenger trains at 7 am from Lauda, Germany. What an experience that was, 1/2 down the track as a train flew by on either side of you!!!
Sorry diesels don't cut it for pure excitement. The main reason I like the former D&RGW is the scenery, and the flavor that remains, in a western setting. Not knocking other places, but I am selective. That German stuff brought back some really fond memories. Since I was just a youngster during the end of steam in this country, going to Germany in the 70's and later South Africa, was my way of experiencing a big show of regular service steam.
There is nothing like it, and I wish some of the younger guys on these boards could have the same experiences. Inside a REAL roundhouse with 10 or so engines simmering is like no excursion steam can ever be.
