A quick note.
Most of Ed's information was simply pipe dreams that started 20 years ago. #5's boiler, having been fully investigated is a worthless piece of iron.
The NCNG tried to build an operation 3 times, each time it was greeted by @#$%&'s and City Officials that didn't want a railroad "there". This is why we are tucked away in an odd parcel of land.
We had an arrangement with the Northern Queen to store our equipment there, and in fact we helped them build their operation. They donated part of the land for our museum, and for years they were a huge help in our getting off the ground.
However, as a railroad operation, its more of a joke than anything else. As an outside observer, their operation is a complete safety mess, Argent #5 is NOT cared for and operates at such a low pressure its a wonder they can move it all. To top it off, the Ramey family is responsible for the destruction of the remains of one of our cars.
There is a lot of things that don't need to be said about them, but currently we try and keep our distance from them. We have once taken the Sac Brick engine down to operate on the loop which was fun, and occasionally we might do it again. These are not public operations however.
Our plan for now is to build a collection of finely restored equipment. If we ever get some sort of operation going the "best bet" would be something out of Colfax. For now Sac Brick 1 will be making a trip or two off the property this year to operate, and when our motorcar is finished we are planning to take it to different places from time to time as well.
It is my personal goal to one day see #5 operate again and have it available to tour once or twice a year. This is a very long term goal and we have plenty of equipment to get operational. As of last count we have 15 pieces of rolling stock that need to be restored, 2 that are restored and a lot of work ahead of us.
We'd all love to see an operation of some sort, but we aren't holding our breath.
