Ed, we have a member on the current steam crew that fired the Davenports when he was a youngster. Being from Virginia City, he grew up around the Bovey collection; helped put in the original 30" gauge line and then operated the equipment. Spent a week doing track work with him last summer. He is still going strong.
I think the best work up of the early history of the Alder Gulch was done by Jeff Terry several years ago over on the RPN site. He had several photos of the Davenports and a good record of the history.
The remains of two Bovey dinkys are now in the Bozeman area in private ownership and may someday be restored. Butte and Great Falls each have one on display.
