I believe the story is in the Colorado Rail Annual #14. It was an interesting read! I'm not sure if CRA#14 is available or not but you can check with the Colo. Railroad Museum and find out!
Y'know, the same thing could be said of all of the steam locomotives that went to the scrapper! The D&RGW was not interested in preserving history!! In fact, one of the ex-Crystal Lake locos (either C-21 #360 or #361 or possibly C-25 #375) were "spirited" away to the scrapper even though Mr. Richardson had inquired about acquiring that particular locomotive (cetainly for more than scrap value!) It's almost enough to make you want to bang your head against a brick wall!
Realizing this puts into perspective just how much we are indebted to all of these early preservationists for what they were able to save! Without their efforts we would quite possibly have only some old photographs and little else!
