This shot of the shaft on #12 might help with your question regarding joint orientation. I was looking through the Shay repair parts catalog and it looked like the line shafts have the fingers in line on both ends. On the crankshafts it looks like the fingers might be rotated 45 degrees on one end. My photo seems to support that if you compare the holes on the U joint in front of the cylinders vs the one at the rear.
