That was way over the $1.02 worth and very interesting. Thank you. Now this is what I was hoping to learn. If a re-gauged Shay was use on under 15 degree curve it wouldn't have much trouble, but you explained why the angles come more critical on more severe lines, and the replacement of the cylinder is justified.
Now, if the 10.25" spacer block is put in behind the pinion gear and press the wheels in for 36" gauge, none of that relocation is necessary. Why would stress be different on the axles, journals, or wheels if at a lesser spacing? Maybe this study will help the Pine Creek Shay in the future.
