Basically a good description of the water brake. It was developed by a Frenchman (Le Chantieler or something like that - hard to remember spelling, I wouldn't even try to pronounce). It involved some extra piping to intrduce water to the cylinders. Problems with the lubrication being washed away and blown cylinder heads appear to have prevented its widespread acceptance. I believe I have a DRGW train handling book with instructions for its use, so I assume that DRGW did make some use of it (at least on the std. gauge side.)
The Sweeney brake used the same principle as the "Jake Brake." It also had some extra piping. The cylinders became an air compressor, the compressed air created could be added to the engine's main resevoir (as I remember). Its drawbacks were lubrication (again), and excessive wear in the cylinders. It seems it drew the air through the exhaust nozzle and smokebox, and injesting cinders was a problem. I don't believe it ever gained wide accceptance with the railroads either.
