When I was firing locos for the D&S in 1999, a K-36 was good for 12 cars and a K-28 was good for 10 including the box. I believe the 476 was a bit stronger than the '73 or the '78, but that is a mute point right now.
That summer the 480 had some tube trouble at Elk Park on a Westbound move with 12 cars. The 476 backed from Silverton down to the 480's train and pulled the dead 480 and all 12 cars to Silverton, then combined both trains for the Eastbound return. As luck would have it, it was raining as the 476 was trying to pull all 22 cars up the highline. They sent a work train up the next day to retrieve the 480 from Silverton. Still have a picture of Joel Mason in the cab of the cold 480 as it was passing through the valley. Anything over 12 or 14 cars becomes a boarding issue in Durango, I believe. I know from experience that 24 cars puts the loco better than halfway around the balloon when you clear College Ave.
