Trust me, in 1981 when we were there. They recoupled the two engines right past the bridge after crossing it. I remember it being stopped there for a few minutes, and it pulled out just as we got back there from our hillside overlook where we had hiked to photograph, and film, the crossing of both the light engine and the engine with the train.
What you say about going to Tank Creek makes sense, but thats about 3 more miles up the track. My question now is, after climbing into Rockwood, why is a doubleheader even needed the rest of the way to Silverton. Why not use helpers to Rockwood and return to Durango? I know there is a bit of a grade back to rockwood along the highline, but its not that severe is it?
I guess the other question is why doublehead back to Durango?
