The Valley RR in Essex, CT here offers (usually this month) a program where a 'class' of trainees can become 'engineer for the day'. Includes an hour of training and I believe 1 hour (or was it 1 run? its about the same) on the mainline per person. I heard good things about it, and I sent someone in that direction. It's the only thing like it on the East Coast; although the Maine NG Museum in Portland offered this at one time (not sure if they still do).
I may be up in Essex in the next 2 weeks actually...I'll see if there's fliers around.
Roaring Camp also offered a program (though not a 'rent-an-engine', but an 'engineer for the day' with a full day experience and I believe *some* throttle time); I'll leave it to the RC&BT guys to go into that; Jeff Badger did a nice write-up on RYPN not too long ago about it.
The Golden Gate RR Museum in San Francisco also offers a 'rent-an-engine' program on their trackage at Hunter's Point naval shipyards in San Francisco. The 2472 was part of this program; and will be again. The diesels (a GP-9, Fairbanks-Morse, and maybe another) are still availible for rent.
An article on these various programs is in store for the January/February 'ON TRACK' webzine, since a few people have asked about these progs. I'll try and be talking to folks who have participated in these programs at various locations.
