Bob,
At the Loop, I am qualified to operate the locomotives. During a CRRM event, I would much rather let other people operate the locomotives. This is because of the high number of people that show up to CRRM where it is possible to easily walk near or on the tracks. I've had people jump out directly in the middle of the track to get that perfect picture while pulling a train into Silver Plume. It's a heart wrencher - even going at a slow speed. The guys that do this for the museum have to be on full alert all the time and that makes it a lot more difficult.
Now imagine yourself as a student engineer that is not quite familiar with the braking ratio of the train and having a moment where you must react immediately and react properly.
I think a student engineering program would be great - if it is not at a public event with lots of wondering souls with cameras glued to their face.
