In the old days the cord that was run from the passenger cars was connected to a bell or gong in the cab.
At OERM the "Emma Nevada" still has its original cab and it has a nicely shapped wood board for mounting a gong.
My understanding is that instead of stringing a cord through the train, each car had a cord that was tied togeather at the platforms. This is the reason old passenger cars had the small hole above the end door and often a hole on the trim piece at the end of the roof overhang.
