It makes sense that there is more smoke beyond Hermosa since thats where the hill starts to Rockwood. Likewise on the C&TS it starts just before Lake Lobato all the way to Cumbres. This is why we chose to do our special from Chama to Cumbres, since it would be more exciting(more action both smoke and sound). Watch the train from Cumbres to Antonito and it will be light smoke and rod clank versus stack talk, cause its downhill!
Cheers,
Greg
PS People want to see steam engines at their most exciting locations, so it is obvious that the grades are where we like to shoot them. This is also what makes the C&TS so special, cause most railroads don't have a 4% grade they run on every day! A well-known steam guru in the UK, named David Thornhill used to write a steam pamphlet called "World Steam" He once called the C&TS the best steam tourist line in the world. This of course was back when they did more photo freights too.
