I absoutely can't believe what this thread has turned into.
The whole point was that we had a freight train running at FULL THROTTLE, with another train running 20 FEET in front of it.
How many railroads would even allow such a thing?
Neither Greg nor I said one word to the C&TS crew about how to run their train as far as firing,whistling etc. We asked for the "camera platform" train, and a tonnage freight train to run behind it.
Looking back it was incredible that they did this, and if you look at the video, they did a pretty good job of pacing one train with the other.
And as Greg said in his post above, there was plenty of running with a clean stack. One has to remember that a still photo only captures one instant in history.
When the photo in question was taken, I was sitting there just amazed at all of this and thought that it would be neat to get a shot if it.
So folks, don't read too much into how 484 was being fired at that instant. We had good people running 484, and they sure know more about how to run and fire it than anyone posting here.
