Hi Dan,
Having been raised with the espee's Santa Cruz Branch line (The old Santa Cruz Railroad) in my back yard, I have known about the Jupiter all my life. I have spent many hours looking at the one and only photo of her in service in Santa Cruz. I feel that this is still one of my all time favorite historic railroad pictures.
In the late 1960's or early 1970's
F.Norman Clark the founder of Roaring Camp came really close to buying the jupiter and returning her home to Santa Cruz County. Mr. Clark wanted to restore the jupiter and run her on his railroad. As it turned out the deal felI though and she instead went to Washington DC.
I have to admit that although her restoration is not completly accurate she has found a good home in the Smithsonian institute.
Quite the move and talk about ulcers. pass the Rolaids
