While I have no engineering degree, that boiler barrel length certainly could have accommodated a combustion chamber.
And another thing...40" drivers? If they'd have changed this to 42" or even 44", it would have sucked up some of that excess t.e. that the light weight
on the drivers wouldn't have liked. You may not have run any faster, but it would have cut down on driver and other reciprocating wear.

combustion chamber. No cheating.
