I am guessing the switch is lined for the wye because they are getting ready to turn the caboose (notice the markers have been left at the west end of the caboose). For the life of me I cannot figure out why they would turn the caboose (just move the markers, and cabooses clearly did run in either direction). But in checking several pix the evidence suggests cabooses did get turned at Cumbres, maybe not all the time but at least sometime. So the bigger question might be was there any pattern, and if and when they were turned why? Not only on Cumbres but elseshere on the DRGW ng. Inquiring minds want to know! Did crews prefer one directin over the other? In my railroad experience cabooses simply ran whatever way they were pointed, I can not remember ever turning a caboose to get it pointed in a specific direction. But I am never too old to learn (and a failing memory creates lots of opportunities).
