The "painterly" look seems to be a common outcome when I run old Kodachromes through Photoshop. Kodachrome was a great film under good lighting conditions, and best case needs little adjustment. But with dark engines, or when the sun started to disappear, or if you under exposed a bit the results could be quite dark and lacking in contrast. Photoshop allows you to fix a lot of those problems. Sometimes it is amazing how much detail is hidden in those shadows. But once you start tinkering with the natural lighting, it is easy to end up with a resutl that looks more like a painting. This image is an example. Maybe I can get a more natural version, but at least this seemed like an improvement over the dark and flat original. The good news is I am retired and can spend endless hours tinkering around with these old images.
