Movies trains and authenticity

August 19, 2004 07:58PM
One of my pet peaves has become trains in movies that are not correct for the period depicted, modern cars that don't go into emergency when the bad guys break the train into and other such offences to anyone with historical and mechanical sense. It seems like there are plenty of semiprofessional rail historians that could help Hollywood keep things straight. The other night we rented the movie Ned Kelley which is set in Australia in the 1870's. A scene showed a close up of a locomotive pulling into a station. The engine itself did not give it's vintage away to me, but the Pyle Nat. RE6 Dynamo I think it was, on the running board sure did.
I have noticed the same with historic vehicles. Scenes set in the 19teens with model T Fords of late 20's vintage and even an occaisional model A which of course came out in 1928 (well late 27 if you want to be exact).
