The timing of the passenger services on the STB have become a bit unclear, but on this day I rode a short 3-car passenger train behind 298 56 to the small town of Aschach where we pulled into the siding to meet a longer passenger train. The conductor walked ahead to line the turnout for the upcoming switching moves
After the train pulled by 298 53 came to a stop, 298 56 pulled ahead, attached our 3cars to the end of the longer train, and returned to couple on as lead engine
There was time for a little chat between the two engineers before charging double-headed out of Aschach. Happy days on a narrow gauge that time seemingly forgot (at least for another ten years, until 1982)
Today the 12 miles between Gruenburg and Garsten remain, and operate as a scenic preserved railroad with some of the original steam engines
