Thank You Terry!!!! You're my favorite person today!!
My dad and I were on that trip, riding #100's sand box. I think the actual date was July 5 or 6 as July 4 with a Thursday in 1968. We got a post card from the WMSR folks saying they were running a special doubleheader that day and invited us up to ride. For some reason WMSR owner Reed Hatch took a shine to 9-year-old yours truly and we got a cab ride out of the deal.
It was purely "for fun". Later I would ride on #100 pulling 4 cars by itself and later on #36 pulling all 5 of those heavyweight former MKT coaches. I think the ruling grade was in 2% range.
Fuzzy: You are thinking of the Last Train To Maverick trip over Labor Day in 1967. I rode that one too, In the cab of #100 to Maverick and on #36's tender on the trip home.
That was a really nice railroad and was just coming into its own when the local indian tribe decided to boot Reed & Co. off the mountain, what a crime and a loss to many.
Stopped for water halfway up the mountain
Lunch stop at Apache Springs
My first photo run. Taken with my 126 roll film Kodak Brownie.
I owe my railroad career to Reed Hatch. He planted the bug in my brain, I was never the same. God Bless you Reed...
