By sheer coincidence, Tank -
John West and I were both in Chama those two days, although IIRC we didn't actually meet until about forty years later. The "brass" on the train were accompanying John Gruber of
Trains magazine; that's probably him in the yellow hardhat in the photo you posted above and at the left of the group of fans below, with his young son, watching #497 take water the following morning
