I am sad that Cal Polly does not want to keep the railroad going.
The article says that the university put up a go fund me site that raised $50,000 towards restoring the railroad.
If they are going to get rid if it, the money should be returned to the donors.
The article also states that the ranch was willed to Cal Polly by the owner, Albert Smith, with direction for the railroad to be kept intact and open to the public.
It seems that the university now wants the land for expansion of their campus.
Later in the article it states "Al Smith knew that it was possible the university may not be the best steward of the railroad assets in the long-term; so, he explicitly outlined potential future recipients"
It would seem to me that if Cal Polly is not going to honor the donor's wishes, railroad and the land it occupies should be transferred to one of the future recipients.
Perhaps the Swanton Railroad Society can file a lawsuit against Cal Polly to have the land and railroad transferred to a different recipient.
We would need to have the text of the will to know what might be possible.
