Cabooses were assigned to specific terminals. For along time, they were assigned to specific conductors. 0505 and 0540 were assigned to Durango for eons of time. So, Greg, are you saying a train come cabooseless from Durango? Not possible.

It was fairly common to add an extra caboose to freights out of Alamosa to accomodate the section crew in the winter.

Trivia - The train that came east from Durango was pulled by 497 making its last run to Chama.
