This picture tells a lot of the story...
....basically every car rebuilt by the Friends from the ground up, and not just cosmetically.
One of the interesting issues with regard restoration is "preservation" versus "recreation". Some historians, including some in the state historic offices that have some say in what happens on the C&TS, have in the past preferred to see original bits preserved, rather than new recreations, no matter how authentic. Similar to the debate about using historic equiipment consumes original fabric, etc. Clearly not a black and white issue, not always consistently applied, but one of the constraints on what the Friends of the C&TS can do. Seems to me that is one of the things that has stopped any effort to rebuilt the snow sheds.
I just feel lucky that we have dedicated volunteers working at so many historic railroads now.
