The Atlanta Chapter NRHS had S&A 750 donated to it in the 1960's in operational condition from the president of the S&A. It was the chapter's first operable steamer. It helper Southern's steam program in the 1960's and 70's. In the late 1980's (when she was superceeded by larger DRR and N&W power), she was rented to the State of Georgia for use on the New Georgia RR inside the City of Atlanta (on an old freight belt line).
750 was placed under lease such that the loco was to be returned in the same condition it was leased in (operable but not quite FRA/ICC OKed). Steve Polk was not only head of the GA Building Authority but also a railfan. When he died, the New GA died and 750 (which had been sidlined about before the 1996 Olympics due to a thin crown sheet - rumor says Purdie sidelined her when he stuck his finger through it) was returned with most of the firebox and flues missing.
I doubt the Chapter will ever have her run again.
Make sure #30 has an air-tight lease on her. Also I would reccoment that the money to repair her before returning her from the lease be put in escrow (yeah right - they can not afford to restore her once much less twice).
Good luck and I hope C&S #9 along with #30 and the one in Idaho Springs do not end up as scrap.
