These things were a major fad/problem back around the turn of the 20th century. ISTR that some states passed laws at that time, which may remain on the books, outlawing them at that time. Using them on any line without permission is likely to make one a candidate for a Darwin Award. Even if the line actually is abandoned, that just means auto drivers at grade crossings will not be looking for (as much as they ever do) anything coming on the tracks.

In short, Bad Idea, and has been for over 130 years!
