There are two alternate routes -- maybe three.

One is to go south to Mojave and then over Tehachapi Pass on Route 58 to Bakersfield and Route 99 to Fresno; then up to the YMSP. (An alternate to this is to go through the southern Sierras on State Route 178 which is north of 58. This would be more mountainous.)

The other is to go further north on 395 through Bridgeport and then go over the Sierras on State Route 108. After Sonora Pass the highway descends to Jamestown.

PS John mentioned highway 50 across Nevada being a lonely drive. You will find that Highway 6 from Ely though Tonopah to Bishop to be even more lonely.
