They were like razors and you did not want any body parts in the way. One of the more dangerous things to watch out for along the tracks.

That they are. I have a sample from more recent times I used as a prop in Operation Lifesaver presentations. It was two inches wide and thicker than the usual steel banding. Definitely something to avoid when connected to a moving train.
