I ran across this picture in my files and remembered this discussion.
Looks to me that each stack was held down by a metal band. A lot of lumber loads everywhere used these bands, and when the car was unloaded the bands were often left hanging off the side of the car to drag along the ground. They were like razors and you did not want any body parts in the way. One of the more dangerous things to watch out for along the tracks.
