My impression is that the pile drivers used to build trestles either had sufficient overhang (like Paul mentioned) and/or the pile driver had the ability to slide forward and backward atop the flatcar they were riding.
OB (to me) seems like it was designed to place lineside poles - are you sure it was used to build trestles?
