"Dump it over the side" comments bring to mind the old new (I think it's been rebuilt again since the last time I went over it in '73) highway through the Salt River Canyon in Arizona (US 60). It was like a reverse mountain pass, you wound down one side, crossed the river, then climbed out the other. I'll never forget standing at a pull-out there with my older brother (Sis wouldn't play along) counting the wrecks, many of them burnt, that you could see down below the road. I forget how many it was exactly, but it was over 20 at that one point.
Or spotting cars (not as many burnt) that had come off the road above the other side of the canyon while going through Gore Canyon in a dome car on the RGZ...
Yes, my childhood left me scarred and makes me drive slow & careful on roads I don't know. OTOH, I've always made it back with the car in one piece! (not to mention my passengers)
