Williams Pass was in terrible shape and closed completely for a few years until last year. A wonderful 4WD and land advocacy group out of Buena Vista, CO called CORE was able to work with the San Isabel NF and arranged to adopt the trail (they have also adopted Hancock Pass which is important to our Alpine Tunnel access as well). Last summer they undertook a massive effort to repair Williams Pass and clear the road for travel. It is now in good shape and we expect it to be open the month of August again this year, snow melt permitting. And by good shape I mean it is still a rugged road and requires high clearance 4WD, but is now safely passable.
Incidentally CORE is also helping clear the ROW of rockfall this August. They are one of the many important and varied allies working to restore vehicular access to the Alpine Tunnel.
