John Olberg ran helpers quite a bit.

Until the RR went to 2-train format in 1980, to my knowledge, the C&TS never ran ore than 2 round trips a week on Sat-Sun and Tues-Wed.

You really do need a second person up in the cab of the 19 to watch the left side. The hoods do a good job of blocking the view of the other side. The might have used an engineer, conductor and a fireman/brakeman.
