I think the Scenic gang whipped this train together at the last minute to add capacity to sold out trains. I don't think there are steps on the boxcars. It looks like they simply filled in the opening where the door had been. At one time there was a platform on one end of the Tahoe Gon, but I don't see it here. So how did everyone get on the train? My guess is by the platforms of the 0503.

0503 has never had any sort of restroom. So I guess one needed a strong constitution to ride this train..

Tank is right about the carefree carpentry work opening up the boxcars. The rear car's chainsaw work is not very straight. On all the boxcar coaches, one of the corner braces in the middle of the body had to be moved downward and the new window opening went right through it. These cars still have the braces in place.
