That's light grey smoke, clearly visible in
this video without the backlighting to confuse. Unburnt fuel is black. Certainly not a cold start type exhaust either and that loco's engine should have been up to operating temperature before even crossing the first street.
In viewing some of the WP&Y videos you'll see that they took efforts to maintain a clean exhaust when spooling up, unlike any Indian Railways ALCo powered stinkers. I guess that the Skagway Cruiseship clientele wouldn't be too impressed by roiling clouds of filthy black exhaust obliterating their scenic view.
One other thing, these MLW's are rated for 60mph, I wanna see that happen.
But then again, photogs love it if you deliberately smoke'em.
