A now deceased friend of mine told me about a machinist that he knew. This man had is own shop here in the Los Angeles area and primarily did prototyping and small runs for the aerospace industry.
The story was related to me that this man hosted some school groups in his shop. He would tell the students that yes his hands got dirty; but, he made more doing this work than the "clean hands" jobs the students often thought of going in to (computer, high tech, etc.).
Later on (maybe six - eight or more years ago), I was told that this machinist could not find a machinist to employ. So he ended up sponsoring a young machinist (and his family) to immigrate from Poland.
