I wouldn't have the view that the Friends are just for people once they retire. While work sessions are their bread and butter, there are other opportunities to help out even if you can't make the sessions. Just simply being a member and calling into their monthly meetings provides a fascinating insight to the narrow gauge restoration world. As someone that brings down the average age of narrow gauge railfans, I can attest being a member and getting involved as a very fulfilling way to be 'in the hobby'.
