I searched the digital newspapers available on the
Chronicling America at The Library of Congress. I used the phrase “Rio Grande” and the word “wreck”.
I found two entries which source a report (or newspaper) out of Pueblo. April 22 which was a Friday.
Daily Los Angeles Herald, April 24, 1881
A Fatal Accident on the Denver and Rio Grand Road.
Pueblo, Col., April 22. – This afternoon a passenger coach in the Denver and Rio Grande train which left here for Chama last Wednesday, jumped the track two miles east of the Rock Tunnel, and rolled a hundred and fifty feet down an embankment. No other cars left the track. The wrecked car contained fourteen passengers, of whom five men and one woman were killed outright, and three slightly and three seriously injured. No employe [sic] of the road were injured except the fireman, who was riding in this coach.
The Portland daily press, April 25, 1881
Down An Embankment
A Denver and Rio Grande Train Wrecked and Six Passengers Killed.
Pueblo, Col., April 23. – Yesterday a passenger coach containing 14 passengers on the Denver and Rio Grande train, which left here for Chama last Wednesday, jumped the track two miles east of the Rock Tunnel, and rolled 150 feet down the embankment. No other cars left the track. Five men and one woman were killed, and three slightly and three seriously injured. No employes [sic] were killed except the fireman, who was riding in the coach.
Two other newspapers were found using an initial and incomplete report coming from Denver on April 22.
It appears that the newspaper in Pueblo has not been digitized.

History Colorado reports:
History Colorado holds the largest collection of Colorado newspapers available, ranging from 1859 through the present day. The collection contains more than 1700 microfilmed newspaper titles from towns across the state.
That is a problem when using digital sources. In Nevada I find several of the microfilmed newspapers that I have utilized have not been incorporated in the current digitizing project. Similarly with California, although more may be on the way.
