Ha ha, I'm not a technical guy so we'll see if this is correct. A deckless cab is where the firebox extends all the way through the cab, right to the apron of the tender.

I thought the same. The double Fairlies in Wales seem to zip right along and are apparently good riding machines. The double Fairlie on the Toronto Grey & Bruce wasn't liked either, so it must have been a North American bias as much as anything.
