I think you hit the nail on the head about the cordwood fuel. The Toronto & Nipissing’s loco “Shedden” seen in your link, was a sister locomotive (consecutive serial numbers) to the Toronto Grey & Bruce engine “Caledon”, from my earlier post here [
ngdiscussion.net]. Both locos must have had a third person acting as a wood passer. Otherwise I don’t have a clue how a lone fireman could have climbed up there with the engine rocking and rolling down the tracks. Add in winter ice and snow on top of that, and Health & Safety wasn't even an afterthought!!!!!
The only saving grace for the “Caledon” at least, may have been that she was mostly used as a helper on a particularly steep and curvy part of the line, as opposed to making overly long continuous mileages.
