Another thing that can cause a siderod failure is excessive lateral motion of the drivers combined with fairly tight side rod bushings. This happened many (as in about 20) years ago to Marvin and myself westward from Antonito when the right rear siderod (between #3 and #4) let go. We had only recently gotten the drop pit working in Chama. 487 had its lateral taken up in #1,2,& 4 but not in the #3 boxes yet. A new set of rod bushings were put on. The drivers will continue to work in the boxes but the tight bushings put a bind on the rods, the only thing left to give is the rod itself. Eventually a crack developed on the inside near the center that slowly worked its way toward the front. At about 50% the rod gave up.
463 is an odd duck in that the knuckle pins are between #2 & #3 and #3 & #4. The usual placement is between #1 & #2 and #3 & #4. With no knuckle to give between #1 & #2, that could have aggravated the problem.
