Good report, EL Coke. Add to that poor track with lots of up and down movement which results in fatigue of the metal from constant flexing.
"Does somebody know why some of these things are fixed joints, instead of with keys or pins as pressure relief devices?"
Reason is that the stress loads are so large its not practical. To do it you would have to increase the rotating mass, I would estimate between 25 and 50%. That would mean even more counter balance, causing more stress on the running gear and track.
