I have heard a few stories like that.

A kind of opposite story. When I was 17 the family did a vacation to Hawaii. Most of the first week was on Oahu and I think we got a rental car for only one day. Now this back in the mid-1960s when there was no such thing as unlimited millage. So the odometer mileage counted.

I think all of the driving was in Honolulu from Waikiki Beach to the Punch Bowl cemetery and a few other places. The other days we had taken tour buses, cabs or walked. An error must have been made because instead of -- say -- 25 miles the difference was 125 or 225 miles.

I learned there and then to always check the odometer mileage before leaving the rental car lot.
