With a regular car, you could chase it for a few miles out of Antonito, but the road turns increasingly rough and sandy. Without a 4WD I wouldn’t go too far on this road. Also, you should be able to drive around and access the top of the road going down into Sublette in time to catch it there. From there to Osier, you should be able to drive into Osier, but be careful, the switchbacks down into Osier could be problematic for a conventional car. It surely would be better to chase on the east side with a 4WD vehicle with good ground clearance.
Do try to ride the train if you can — it would provide a unique experience and helps the railroad in these tough times.

As for chasing the D&S, I think the best you can do is catching it at Rockwood going and coming. You can’t access the rest of the line, particularly with a conventional car. I understand they now charge for parking at Rockwood. Again, if you want to see along the route, a train ride might be the best thing.
